Listening to right-wing radio (since that's about the only radio being offered these days in my neck of the woods), I notice a palpable nostalgia for the Vietnam War days. People calling in like to rant about Kerry's eventual opposition to the war, implying that the U.S. war effort was some righteous cause. I guess the idea is that the U.S. effort, no matter how ideologically vague or politically mismanaged, was essentially altruistic as the moral U.S. attempted to share democracy with the rest of the world (this, of course, before the evil lefty hippies stepped in and nixed the endeavor). I hate to pop anyone's bucolic fantasy of American flags flying over Vietnamese rice fields, but the fact of the matter is (a fact that is in ALL history books on the Vietnamese War) that America's initial involvement in Vietnam had NOTHING to do with democracy.

My personal take on Kerry and Vietnam is that his opposition to the war and his discarding of his metals afterwards is one of the few really good reasons to vote for him.
As tedious and painful as it is to constantly rehash a dark period in our history (frankly, I'm sick to death of discussing Vietnam), I guess we're stuck in the loop
unless the Right finally comes to terms with the past. Until they do, Vietnam will continue to hang over our national consciousness like a "Shadow" (Carl Jung's term), clouding our perceptions of who we are, and the better people we need to become. I believe it's time they "let it all hang out," as the hippies used to say. All the false notions the rightwing fanatics have clung to in denial these past decades have only festered within their own small personal enclaves. They need to hash them out in the open where their ideas can be publicly scrutinized by the rest of us.
Thus, while the Left is concerned over the fact that the Right has taken over talkradio, which indeed it has, I say let them have their nostalgia fest so that the boogeyman can come out of the closet. I believe talkradio offers the psychological catharsis these regressive and isolated minds need to finally get it out of their system, and hopefully GET OVER IT, so that we can all move on to a better and brighter future.
